What Nails To Use For Plywood Subfloor?

When installing a plywood subfloor, choosing the right nails is crucial for a stable and squeak-free foundation. For most subfloor applications, we recommend using ring shank nails. These nails have circular ridges along the shank that provide superior holding power and resist loosening over time.

The ideal nail size for plywood subfloors is typically 2 inches (50.8 mm) in length. This length ensures adequate penetration into the floor joists while avoiding contact with any utilities that may be running beneath.

We suggest using 8d ring shank nails, which have a diameter of 0.0915 inches (2.32 mm). These nails offer excellent holding strength and are suitable for most residential subfloor installations.

For thicker plywood or in high-traffic areas, you might consider using 10d ring shank nails, which are 3 inches (76.2 mm) long with a diameter of 0.1205 inches (3.06 mm). However, be cautious of the increased risk of hitting utilities with longer nails.

When installing your subfloor, it’s important to follow proper nailing patterns and spacing. Typically, nails should be spaced 6 inches (152.4 mm) apart along the edges of the plywood sheets and 12 inches (304.8 mm) apart in the field.
