The Manufacturing Process

Plywood is manufactured through a series of carefully controlled steps:

Log Selection and Preparation

    • Logs are carefully chosen based on quality and size
    • Bark is removed, and logs are cut to the appropriate length

    Peeling

      • Logs are softened in hot water or steam
      • A rotary lathe peels thin veneers from the log

      Drying

        • Veneers are dried to a specific moisture content in large ovens

        Grading and Sorting

          • Dried veneers are inspected for quality and sorted

          Glue Application

            • Adhesive is applied to alternate layers of veneer

            Layup

              • Veneers are stacked with the grain direction of each layer perpendicular to the adjacent layers

              Pressing

                • The layered veneers are pressed under high pressure and heat to cure the adhesive

                Finishing

                  • Panels are trimmed to size and sanded smooth
                  • Any necessary repairs or patches are made

                  Grading and Quality Control

                    • Final inspection ensures the plywood meets industry standards

Understanding how plywood is produced helps appreciate the engineering that goes into creating this strong, versatile material. From careful log selection to the final quality control checks, each step ensures that the product meets the high standards demanded by the wood industry.
