When installing plywood siding, selecting the right nails is essential for a durable and weather-resistant exterior. For most plywood siding applications, we recommend using stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized ring shank nails. These nails resist corrosion, preventing rust stains and ensuring long-term holding power in various weather conditions.

The ideal nail size for plywood siding depends on the thickness of your plywood, but a good general-purpose size is 2 inches (50.8 mm) in length. This length provides sufficient penetration into the framing while allowing for proper installation of the siding.
We suggest using 6d ring shank nails with a diameter of 0.0720 inches (1.83 mm) for most plywood siding installations. These nails offer excellent holding power without causing excessive damage to the plywood surface.
For thicker plywood or in areas with high wind loads, consider using 8d ring shank nails, which are 2.5 inches (63.5 mm) long with a diameter of 0.0915 inches (2.32 mm).
When installing siding, it’s crucial to follow proper nailing patterns and maintain the recommended distance from the edges of the plywood to prevent splitting.
